This was a major disappointment. The worlds she build in the first three books got smashed together in this one without the care that she took to make for interesting characters or subtly complex relationships. I would still read books 1 & 3 but let your mind wander as how they resolve the stories.

so i accidentally read this as the first in the patternist series but rlly enjoyed and im gonna read wild seed next . this should be interesting

What a book…and what a way to end a series. I can only imagine how exhilarating a read this would’ve been when it was first published. The last book of the series, but the first published…Butler is an amazing world-builder, and when I say she ate me up with this one, I absolutely mean she ate me up with this one.

The Patternmaster was a welcome change from Wild Seed and demonstrates the breadth and uniqueness of a master like Butler. While this book is in the same universe as wild seed, it may as well be entirely disconnected at first glance. This book is hundreds of years into the future and while it is connected to other books, it is a world in its own right. Butler always leaves us with more to think about and this book had me wondering at the size of the pattern, the perspective of the Clayarks and all sorts of other things. Excited for the next one.

I wish I wrote this when I finished this book a week ago. I remember loving the world that was created and loving the imagery of the pattern, but feeling like descriptions of the world were done hastily and events heavy with context unknown to the reader quickly followed. I wanna read the rest and I think I’ll go in the order of the time they were published!
