It was great to see urban fantasy in a different setting and mythology to the usual western-European vampires, werewolves and fae. The complicated dynamics of the various groups of magic users made for a good helping of tension and kept me guessing about which side was 'good' and 'evil' and what Wiki's next moves should be. However, I found the book a little hard to get into. It throws you straight into the action, which in some ways is a good thing, but it took me a while to connect to the characters and the plot and the pacing was a little uneven. Once the plot really found its feet, though, in the latter half of the book, there was plenty to keep the pages turning as all the little clues and plot threads weaved together, and I'm definitely curious to see what happens in the sequels.

The book also hit a lot of the emotional notes really well: the uncertainty of questioning sexuality; not wanting to throw yourself headlong into the first relationship that seems good just to fit in with what is expected of you; the lasting effect of bad experiences and feeling like a burden or too difficult. The questioning/aspec rep is own voices and it definitely shows.
