I have a very different expectation for a Japanese novel that promises a story about a dying young man, a cat he lives with, and a deal with the devil.

Something about this narration was very male and very Western that it gave me white boy podcaster who only realized that time is a social construct and would like to die on the hill that the invention of time was one of the biggest mistake humans have ever made lol idk

It got very preachy, too. I felt like it was trying to be funny and deep and somber all at once… but it just fell flat tryna do all of that. It didn’t feel sincere at all. I couldn’t help but think about the author writing this feeling like he’s being chased to write all of the lessons in life he wants to impart before whatever’s chasing him catches up.

Maybe it’s the translation, too…. A part of me wished I just read this in Japanese because I’m sure the cat spoke keigo or maybe Showa or Taisho or Meiji era slang… I’m imagining the cat maybe sounds like the boy Hotaro trying to sound like the samurai cartoon he watches on TV and not like a British aristocrat lol im dead idk how I finished this…

GOD, I loved this book so much! If I could rate it six stars, I would (and I have- in my head!). I speedran this book in about an hour and a half, most of which I spent crying on my couch. If there's any book I would recommend to almost all of my friends, this would be the one.

I’m what you wanted to become but couldn’t. I’m both the closest and the farthest things from who you are. No one knows exactly how long they’re going to live. So there’s really no such thing as too late or too soon.

Kind of unexpected! Liked the depiction of the devil most of all.
