I can't even lie, when I first tried to read this book about a year ago, I had to DNF. Now that I have actually read it, I absolutely hate myself for not reading it sooner. I was so enamored by this book that I have pages and pages of notes. I drew out family trees. I felt like a detective reading this book.

The amount of emotions I went through with this book is ridiculous, the twists and turns and surprises, I had no idea what was going to happen next. I'm now super nervous for the 3rd book...

Like my heart is hammering writing this right now because
Bryce ended up in Prythian!!!!

Overall, this is a great book. SJM is still introducing you to everything so at times things seem out of the blue but I feel like that’s the point. I would say, I think I liked CC1 better, however, when looking at the SJM universe in total this book provides so much context and clues that it bumped it from a 3.75 to a 4.

This book was even better than House of Earth and Blood! Definitely had to push through to get to the good parts but like any SJM book, the last 100 pages HAD ME HOOKED and made the entire plot building up to it WORTH EVERY PAGE. I CANNOT WAIT to read CC3 in January!!!!!

SJM really knows how to write a third act! I definitely enjoyed the latter section of the book; it’s worth preserving through the slower earlier chapters. Overall it’s a solid fantasy novel with quest and rebellion threads and a lot a spicy scenes (honestly a bit much for me but totally on brand for SJM from what I can tell)
