I loved this book. Sometimes when times are bad, the unconditional love and attention by dogs like Izzy and Lenore can give you the peace you can not find in any other form.

Interesting approach to Hospice Volunteering; but the themes relating to authors depression and troubled childhood seemed to detract from the dogs' stories. Also, it is unclear why the author lives separate from his wife and daughter? Perhaps if one read the authors other books it would be clear, but when reading only this book, it's another distraction. The dogs are wonderful.

The first thing I noted about this book was that it was very much unlike the previous Katz books I've read. For one, there was no long discussion of how he fought with a particular dog to get the poor thing under control. Most of his relationships with dogs have been fraught with tension. This was the first time he seemed to either get dogs who were relaxed or who he didn't try to train through sheer will and craziness. Maybe that's why the two dogs he focuses on in this book are so much better-behaved than his other dogs have been. And maybe it's why he hasn't shown any sign of giving them up (in all, he's given away 3 dogs for various reasons and euthanized one due to aggression issues he refused to work on). The book is billed as being about Izzy (a border collie) and Lenore (a black lab puppy) but really, if you're a lab lover, there isn't a whole lot of Lenore in this book. Most of it focuses on his hospice work with Izzy. The stories he tells about these dying folks and the way his dog connects with them are at turns heartbreaking and heartwarming. I know I said before I have a love/hate relationship with this man and his books...well, this one falls more on the "love" side of things. I ripped right through it in just about a day and loved it.

I really enjoy hearing his stories about the dogs and farm. This one is eye opening about volunteering at hospices and it opens your eyes to what this entails. I have always loved his books and will enjoy reading more

This book is about a white guy and his dogs. No dog dies in this book. There are some teary moments though because of beautiful moments between this dude's doggie and nursing home patients.
I've definitely read better, but this is a nice collection of anecdotes to pick up and work your way through. But I've definitely read better.

I just finished this book tonight and wanted to stop reading it when I read about the depressing storylines related to hospice but decided to keep reading it. I wanted a cute read about cute little dogs but got something else entirely. I would not read this again but am glad that I finished it to see what would happen.

No dogs die in this book! That said, there is death in this book, and it is a major part of the book, as Izzy becomes Katz's partner in volunteering for Hospice Care. I would say that even though this book has a different tone than the other books of his that I've read, the biggest focus is the same - the relationship between his dogs and people/himself. Totally zipped through this one.

Very cute book. One of my favorite things about it was the disclaimer that no dogs die in it - after fearing Marley's death in [b:Marley Me|12691|Marley & Me Love and Life with the World's Worst Dog|John Grogan|http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21WJGBBGBYL._SL75_.jpg|14961] I was relieved to see that. It didn't have much going for it as far as a storyline, but I don't think that was the purpose anyway. The reader still gets to see many cute dog lover moments. It's a cute, quick read.
