Even if this wasn't my favourite work by Vuong, I still devoured this collection. His words pack a punch like no other's. Emotional, raw and human.

& so what - if my feathers
are burning. I
never asked for flight.
Only to feel
this fully, this
entire, the way snow
touches bare skin - & is,
suddenly, snow
no longer.

I mean i knew his writing was impactful but damn, it is strange to read someone who experience life so similarly to me yet so unique. I admire the openess of the author and the masterfull way to manipulate language.

I'll admit i dont understand all the poems, some are a bit obscure, and i felt like on some pages the formating was unnecessary, but i greatly enjoyed reading this collection!

i'm sure these are beautiful poems but i just couldn't understand 95% of them. i understood the themes behind this collection but i couldn't apply them to the words on the page all that well

ok but "the most beautiful part of your body is where it’s headed. & remember, loneliness is still time spent with the world" and "maybe we pray on our knees because god only listens when we're this close to the devil."? COME ON

Ocean Vuong has a beautiful way of twisting horrible things into beautiful words and making the horrible things seem not so horrible and making the beautiful things not so beautiful. I think I’ll have to sit with this one for a while and revisit to really delve into it, but a soulful read for the time being.

I think the poetry was well-written but some of the topic matter wasn’t really for me. I went in thinking this was more of a series of poems tying into family struggles and grief but I found a lot of it lewd and about other things. That’s fine but just not what I expected.

I wish I read this after On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous instead
