Wow. I wish this had won the women's prize. Some stories feel truer than facts. This was one of them. The combination of dark humour and relentless faith in humanity was exactly balanced. The sense that racism and misogyny seem to chase women everywhere, even in so-called benevolent organisations - so finely done. Even the afterword was eminently readable and engaging, right down to the list of actual reports written during her time working for the UN in Iraq. The author's use of humour is so rare in contemporary fiction. I can't wait to read what she writes next.
I DNFed it:(((((( (22%)
Something about the internal dialogue and how Nadia carries and operates is not working for me. Alot of the internal dialogue gives me the ick and the baseline realization that this job would include work. That you have no clue how to do? And that you learned nothing about the UN while researching and writing for the lecture job? Yeah, no makes zero sense to me.
I think I'll try and pick it up some other time, but it'll be a while.

Really good debut. Good sense of humor. The middle was a bit slow for me, but the beginning and last third were really engaging

Really rich characters, especially Nadia's charactirization after being abandoned by her mother. Though I agree with the author, I probably wouldn't have picked this book up if it were non fiction, this also made me want to read the authors non fiction works mentioned in the afterword.
