This story follows a Pakistani-American girl, Mahnoor, on a journey to understand her past. We travel back in time with her as she listens to her grandmother's memories of life during the Partition. The book's message is important and will help students understand how the Partition affected people personally and generationally in the region. I found the historical parts of the story more enjoyable than the present-day parts. Mahnoor was kind of a brat at times. I liked her friend Ahmed, a newly emigrated Pakistani, but I was annoyed with her friend Kim, who was a bit self-absorbed, and Mahnoor constantly needed to apologize to her.

I cannot say enough good things about this book! The way nearly every character had flaws and were very realistic in their reactions to each other, the way every character was able to find empathy and forgive mistakes... It was all just so amazing!

I don’t remember how I stumbled upon this one to add it to my list, but it was definitely a book I was glad I read.

I really enjoyed this middle grade book, set as the main character’s grandmother moved from Pakistan to Texas. The relationship that blossomed between the two and the development of the main characters connection to their history was so good. The reality of identity, and conflicts and pressures of being a teenager in school was really well done.

I only know bits and pieces of the Partition from college, but I didn’t know the violent upheaval that had happened. Goes to show history textbooks are incomplete accounts, and that historical fiction provides a human element to such events. Also, the accounts grandparents tell are very valuable.
