I wanted to like it. I was hyped. However, it's just kind of a mess coddled by the fact that sapphics just don't have as many choices right now.
The world building is a mess. There's spelled BDSM clubs, hidden daggers, katanas, motorcycles, carriages (?), monarchies, crop tops, magic, apothecarists, and no guns...? I'm a little confused. How are we dressing? Is this regeancy agacent or urban fantasy? If it's both, why wasn't that explained? You have motorcycles but not guns? Um, no. The creation myth for the tearing of the worlds was cool, but it was just kind of glossed over along with the rest of the world building.
The developmental editing seems really haphazard. Scarlett and Quinn's first few encounters are repedetive sexy cat-and-mouse, and it looks like the editor told the author to chop off the first third of the book (I'm not kidding, it's 20%) and then just toss it into the final pages as a bonus novella. It reads sloppy. It's not as fun to open up a book understanding that the enemies and lover dynamic has already been established. That's just taking a knife to the juggular of the tension (you know, the corner stone of enemies to lovers books?).
Establishing the two main characters as enemies and lovers in the first few pages did fuckall for all the sex they weren't having. They did fuck but it was a lot of fantasizing and fade to black. They truly only went into detail in the final few spicy scenes which was annoying. As a reader, I didn't understand why they were established lovers if I didn't get to see that and they were already going to go through the main enemies to lovers tropes anyways on their way to becoming actual lovers (one bed, motorcycle sharing, sparring, accidental injury, etc). Again, the developmental editing did this book no favors.
The plot was silly and the third act and one of the main character's reactions to everything unfolding was stupid and frustrating.
I'm just so bummed.

Only read 31% of the book and I will just put it down because if I read more I will force myself to finish it. I will be trying my luck with her other series since it is newer and more popular (and has gay vampires in it lol) but this is just not for me, I am finding it so hard to connect with the characters or be intrigued by the plot. And sure 31% is hardly anything but I did start with the little novella right before this one so I had a certain level of familiarity with the characters. The romance between Quinn and Scarlett wasn’t looking like it was really going anywhere either so I am going to pass on this series.

This was very fun and entertaining. The dialogue between the two main characters was a delight. It wasn't very interesting plot-wise, but that was fine.
