This book was just adorable. It has some of my favorite tropes (grumpyxsunshine and found family) it just all around gave me the warm fuzzies.

3 ⭐️ so cute!! this is mostly vibes and not plot, and the vibes were cozy and wholesome and warm like a giant christmas sweater. i really liked mika and all of the nowhere house inhabitants. and circe!! the practical magic was really fun.

the overall tone and the fact that the book was really laying its heartwarming “love is a leap of faith”/“pursue ur dreams!!” messages on pretty thick made me think it would be even more enjoyable for younger readers, but then some pretty steamy scenes and sexual innuendos came seemingly out of nowhere so now i am conflicted. this was definitely more romance heavy than i anticipated, but it was a very cute grumpy x sunshine situation so i can’t complain. felt a Little too quick to me though.

this was a very charming story and i can’t quite understand why i didn’t connect to the characters and found myself skimming some dialogues around the 50% mark. maybe if it was longer and the interpersonal relationships were more developed i would’ve enjoyed it more, but this story was very cute even though it didn’t quite touch my heart

“It’s a leap of faith to love people and let yourself be loved.
It’s closing your eyes, stepping off a ledge into nothing, and trusting that you’ll fly rather than fall.
I can’t step off the ledge for you, Mika. It’s something only you can do.
And I know you will.
It might not be right now, but I know you.
Sooner or later, you’ll fly.”
-Jamie Kelly, from The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna

“She, Mika Moon, would not be the witch who transformed the world, but she was making it a little better, day by day.
She had once believed witches would never have friendship, community, and each other, but here they were.
She had once believed she would never have a family, but here they were, too.
She, who had once believed she would never leave a mark on anybody, knew now that the marks she had left were unerasable, as much a part of forever as the sea.”
-Mika Moon, from The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna
