Graeber does not disappoint.

Bringing together historical evidence and anthropological insight, this books draws a pretty clear picture of how markets came into being, what money is and how debt worked and works.

If you are in a hurry, read the last chapter and the afterword.

Most importantly, the joke at the book’s very end.
