This book is the first of an entertaining trilogy. There are some of what I would call writing flaws present, and it's hard to tease out whether they exist because this is a YA novel or just because the writer lacked skill. My principal complaint is the amount of repetition. Katniss constantly recaps the same memories, feelings and scenes over and over again - it's less a problem in this book than the subsequent three, but it was enough to irritate me. I also personally found the romance elements a little over-the-top, but again, I think that's a product of the fact that this book is ultimately written for Grade 7, thus these kinds of overwrought/repetitive techniques are useful for that age group.

I'm not going to get preachy about the content. The story is engaging and fresh, and I felt like some of the more murderous segments were done cleanly and without wallowing in gross-out (ahem, Mr. King).

Rating: 4.5/5 stars

For some reason I had a sudden intense desire to reread the Hunger Games trilogy and obviously I had to drop everything I was doing to pursue this. I can’t say I regret it either. I’ve enjoyed revisiting Panem and this lovely cast of characters. And while, yes, the worldbuilding and plot is weaker than i remembered, I just had such a good time reading it again that I'm sticking with this rating.

It's a good book. However, it lacks the depth and character analysis that great books have. It reads like a movie, which makes it for easy reading but does not fully immerse you into the Hunger Games world. It was missing that extra oomph, but I guess I'm asking too much of a young adult novel. I am still going to read the rest of the series and watch the movie.

I mean, I already knew what was gonna happen, but it was nice to be able to finally read this one!
