How ironic it feels to be rating The Anthropocene Reviewed. This book made me laugh out loud, smile, sing, cry, and remember. Reading this book in 2024 brought me back to those early Covid days, desperately trying to maintain my sanity while humanity was aching. I loved the way John couches everything in his own experience while also giving context and information about the subjects he explores, and I especially appreciated the way he openly discussed the impact of colonialism and prejudice in each subject. Listening to John read the audiobook was special, as it felt like a friend telling me stories about their life. I give “The Anthropocene Reviewed” 5 stars.

This is my first John Green book experience, but not my first experience of him. My first experience involve my boyfriend introducing me to VlogBrothers when talking about fond pre-college memories. I have since married this boyfriend and in turn he successfully made me a Nerdfighter. But I was still a jock at heart and reading was still off the table until this year when, as Green puts it, my entire life turned into a "What's the Point?" game.
Read this if you want to learn about the author, the man who has been present since before YouTube and now emerging from the "post" Covid-19 pandemic world. Be enlightened with new ways to describe the fuzzy static that happens during a panic attack with the familiar prose of a John Green video (probably the books too but again, haven't read them. Yet)
Only losing 0.25 because I' m mad i didnt think of this memoir format first, I give The Anthropocene Reviewed 4.75 stars.

a child with severe burns all over was in the ER where John worked as a chaplain. It's not terribly explicit, but he does mention the screaming and agony and helplessness of the parents he wasn't sure how to comfort in the waiting room. Moments like that affected the author enough that he didn't end up going through with divinity school and changes careers. For awhile after that even he believed that the child didn't make it, but he did and he was able to meet with him.

Formatting would have benefited greatly with the use of footnotes, which in turn would have helped with pacing and flow.

I found myself reading an essay or two about topics I had varying levels of interest in, and on to the next essay I would read the title and often put the book down because I had had enough of the meandering stream of consciousness associations for that session.

There were some things that I found value in, but it wasn’t really my cup of tea.

I loved the method of using ideas/things to write a memoir. The personal element/frankness about mental illness drew me in. A little quote heavy at times, but Green acknowledges it.

I was thoroughly surprised by this book. I went in open minded, but I fully expected not to enjoy this book. I don't usually read nonfiction books. I don't go out of my way to find nonfiction books and beyond that general hesitation with nonfiction, the premise of the book didn't really interest me all that much when going into it. But I surprisingly really liked it. I did start to feel a little bored with the book near the end of it. But overall I really enjoyed it and would recommend.
