The second book is even better than the first. Funnier, more action-packed, and makes you amazed by how well the Kane siblings are developing into powerful magicians. (L)

Egyptian here. I enjoyed the first book very much which made me excited to read this trilogy but the racism and stereotyping against my own people in this book is so terrible and ignorant it infuriated me.

What happened between the first book and this one? I was caught so off guard. Overall, this book flopped and left me unimpressed compared to the first one. Whereas in the first installation I fell in love with the Kane siblings and the supporting characters, now they feel like irritating teenagers who made me struggle to get through the book.
There's also a huge leap in plot development besides all of these new students who I personally think bring nothing new to the table except maybe Walt. I still don't understand how two 13 and 14 year olds are supposed to be the teachers of dozens of kids without even having had enough time to master their powers. At least Percy Jackson spends his summers at camp practicing and some of his classmates have spent years educating and training for battles. But in this case they just recruit a bunch of kids with magic abilities, lock them up in a house and wait for them to be instructed and learn something from two preteens.
The Egyptian mythology part was still nice and I really enjoyed the journey through the Ten Houses which was quite interesting and entertaining. On the contrary, the romantic relationships are annoying and hinder the plot, especially considering the age of the main characters. Also, the rushed ending that concludes something like saving the world is only resolved in a couple of paragraphs, giving you the feeling that you skipped several pages.
