Probably a more realistic depiction of getting old but I’d rather live in the Thursday Murder Club reality

A lot of people are saying they lost interest as soon as they figured out what the plot twist was - I disagree! Even after the twist was revealed I enjoyed seeing our characters play out their own discoveries. Tova was an incredibly sweet character and I loved following her. Cameron did get on my nerves as he was a giant manchild, but I enjoyed the rest of the cast so much that I’m willing to largely overlook it. Mostly I loved Marcellus. I never thought I would love an octopus so much. This book was a fast and fun read.

Haters gotta hate :P
Now, I just wanna say that this is a one star FOR ME. I'm definitely not the target audience for this book. Too young and too gay, I guess. But just because I didn't like this book doesn't mean other people won't.
What I should've liked about this book:
- Generally the chapters are short, but unlike other books I've read recently (lookin at you Midnight Library), the perspective actually actually changes.
- The octopus!!!! I adored all of his little chapters (and the audiobook voice for him omg) and honestly would've preferred if the entire book was in his perspective.
- Finally, I really liked Tova as a character. She was so, so sweet and had so many cute quirks. Best Book Granny ever fr.
What I could NOT STAND:
- Predictability. I already guessed the ending way too soon into the book. Like, if you're gonna have a mystery element, at least make it a surprise? The "big secret" was alluded to too much. It felt soooo slow and I was bored the entire time.
- It's also something my mom would read. Meaning: an older woman. I'm not a general fiction girlie. After finishing this, I rushed to the library for some YA fantasy and science fiction. I couldn't relate to Tova, her friends, or any of the younger female characters. (Don't get me started on the male characters.) Everyone was too old for me.
- I didn't care for the writing. I ended up having to borrow the audiobook because I was so disinterested. I would've DNF-ed it at that point, but I was like 80% through and decided just to finish for the hell of it.
- Also, I frickin hated that Scottish guy. I mean, who tf would like a gossipy grocery store cashier who tries way too hard to get one sad old lady to like him?? How about you leave Tova alone?? I also didn't like how he spread nasty rumors about people because he thought it was "helping". And then he didn't get in trouble for it. Made me so mad.
- But Cameron was far more annoying. He was completely incompetant and a man-child. Plus, I didn't understand the whole "I'm really smart because I can regurgitate random, useless information". I was expecting him to use that skill in the aquarium, but then he never did. It's just a useless character trait that's supposed to make the readers think Cameron's smart despite how little he's able to accomplish. He can't even fill out paperwork--not because he has attention issues or other pressing responsibilities, but because he doesn't feel like it. And then his laziness is rewarded in the end. Really?
I know this is harsh, but I still think the hype is totally not worth it. However, if any of the bad things I mentioned sounds good to you, try it out! I'm just very picky lol

This book was so charming and sweet and heartwarming. I marked it down a star because the beginning was slow and drawn out and made it hard to continue. I feel like the first quarter of the book is quite slow. I understand why it might be an artistic choice given the plot but at times it was so boring.
I love the characters and I love the plot and things fit together in such a way that’s so satisfying and doesn’t feel forced. The characters felt so real, infuriatingly real at times! While I normally wouldn’t be attracted to books like this, I decided to take a chance because of the glowing reviews and I am so happy I did!
