A gripping thriller I was unable to put down. I’m a sucker for a crime fiction book especially if it’s from one of the Nordic countries, they hands down seem to write all the best ones.
So many twists and turns in this book. I loved the fact that unlike many others in its genre it wasn’t written from the point of view of a detective or member of the police force.

Pretty competent mystery that follows Tuva, a young hard of hearing journalist with a fear of the forest, as she investigates the murder of two hunters who were found with their eyes cut out. She must face her fears and go deep into the forest to stop the killer and get her story. Enjoyed it without feeling much desire to go onto the next in the series. The constant first person narrative wore me down a little. Worth reading.

I INHALED this book, I couldn't put it down. An easy but thrilling read, and a good one to pick up after a slump.
Just as the protagonist was beginning to become almost unlikeable - as if her character development was rolling backwards in pursuit of the plot - and she was more close-minded in her approach, I was beginning to narrow down a different set of suspects to her. No sooner had that begun to happen, then the book refocused on a red herring previously teased that successfully threw me off the scent for a little while longer.
Some great characterisations in this book and the small town paranoia was really gripping and started making me feel as though there was a much wider conspiracy afoot at points.

I just listened to this entire book and couldn't tell you a think that happened. I could not get into it. I was bored.
I really wanted to like this more than I did but I found myself skipping quite a bit especially closer to the end. Again another book that others seem to enjoy more than me. The book is atmospheric. Gavrik is a bleak as hell town on the edge of the massive forest where hunters are being murdered. There’s a twenty year gap between one set of murders and the current ones and while I liked the reasoning behind them in general the reasons for the gap just didn’t make sense to me. Hard to say without spoilers but the things the victims did wrong never went away in that gap and I couldn’t quite see why the murder would let things go that long before deciding they should start again.
I did like Tuva. It’s great to see some disability representation in a lead character as she is deaf. I liked how it never seemed to hold her back. I also liked that every so often there’d be a micro aggression where the author could go; you know what, that’s may sound like you’re being nice but you’re not. I have friends with sight issues but not hearing so I liked the little bit of education.
Overall I liked the idea behind the story but the execution didn’t quite work for me.
