This wouldn’t be my usual choice of book but I read it as part of a book club. While I enjoyed the plot, the writing style just wasn’t for me and the protagonist was predictable.

After hearing so many good things about this book from my book friends, I knew I had to read it. As usual, they were right.

The setting really adds to the story line. Not only is it bitterly cold but it is also a small minded town with surrounding woodland. I didn't envy Tuva at all investigating a recent murder, especially as a lot of the suspects were total weirdos. Honestly, you have to read this yourself. I felt uncomfortable when Tuva was in their presence never mind Tuva herself!

Tuava I loved. There is definitely more about her time in London I would love to find out more of but I'm sure this will come out further into the series. She has a lot on her plate with a dying mother and trying to get a break with a good story. She certainly stands out as a protagonist with her being deaf. It was great to see her perspective on things and will probably make people think twice before asking certain questions. I also loved how she seems to be a bit of a fan of wine gums, my favourite sweets.

Dark Pines held my attention throughout and has left me very much looking forward to more. It's packed full of suspense and I was constantly second guessing at who the murderer could be. Totally had me shocked when we find out who it is and didn't see it coming what so ever. A gripping and entertaining read.

Debut mystery novel by a non-writer. The story was okay. I didn't find it particularly dark. It did have some interesting characters.

I had a huge issue with the author's writing style and his choice of words. His writing seemed inconsistent throughout. At times, I had the feeling he was rushing through scenes instead of taking the time to flesh them out better. He also clearly does a poor job writing female characters, even if LGBTQ. The female protagonist's narrative just reads as though it is playing out through a male character's eyes, thoughts, and actions versus those of a woman. Overall, it just didn't work as a whole for me.

Tuva Moodyson is 26 and has moved from London back to a small town in Sweden called Gavrik to be close to her mother in hospice care though she never takes the time to visit her. Tuva is a journalist at the small local paper when a body shows up missing its eyes in the dark forest. Having worked as an intern at The Guardian in London, Tuva sees this murder as her big opportunity to write a sensational story allowing her to be picked up as a journalist for a larger paper in a big city. Other same murders happen and there is a link to similar murders from the 1990s that suddenly stopped shortly after they began. To investigate, Tuva has to fight against small-town politics to not disparage the town's name while also digging to report the dirty truth without the assistance of the police.

Yes, we know that the protagonist is deaf. Nothing really happens in 90 percent of this book. Not recommended.

I don't know what I feel about this book. I did enjoy it, there were all the elements to make this a great read. A small town, the woods, creepy characters, but something was missing. I didn't connect with the book the way I thought I would have.

Maybe it had to do with the fact that I already saw the end coming. In fact, it seemed too obvious. Maybe it was because I have read so many crime mysteries that I don't feel thrilled anymore. I also didn't enjoy the pace, but that's just me, I prefer books with a faster pace. HOWEVER, I do understand the beauty of an evenly paced and meticulously written story.

Overall, I think a lot of people will like it (which they clearly already do).

3.5 really!
