Look, I don’t read thrillers. I’m not going to rate this one because I didn’t enjoy it, because I don’t enjoy thrillers. I’m pretty sure it was fine? I finished it, so.
It's an enjoyable book, a nice read when you have a free afternoon and want an easy crime novel.
I truly disliked how many times the author mentioned McDonald's, I mean, I think that if you write a book you have some kind of social responsibility and talking all the time about a chain that causes a lot of suffering to animals and it's super unhealthy (and is completely irrelevant to the story) is just bad.

Dit boek Dark Pines is door het gros van de lezers als een echte pageturner en mustread bestempeld, eindelijk is het verhaal nu vertaald naar het Nederlands en kom ik te weten of al dat lof terecht is. De cover zit alvast goed, een echte thriller cover en de knappe auteursfoto mag er ook zijn. Ik wou gelijk het boek induiken.
Het is enorm vlot geschreven. De auteur loodst je door het verhaal met die vlotte pen door middel van korte hoofdstukken verteld vanuit Tuva’s perspectief. Door niet teveel prijs te geven en Tuva best wat mysterieus te houden lees je verder en is het boek loslaten geen optie.
‘‘Wat?’ vraag ik weer, friemelend om mijn gehoorapparaat- jes aan te zetten. ‘Wat is er gebeurd?’ Lena haalt haar hand weg van haar gezicht. ‘Ze hebben een lijk gevonden.’’
Tuva Moodyson is een journaliste, heeft een verleden waar nog vele vraagtekens zijn voor zowel de lezers als voor haarzelf, zo lijkt het wel. In dit boek krijg je naar mijn gevoel de basics mee en is er nog zoveel meer aan dit personage om te ontdekken.
Tuva werkt voor de lokale krant, wil vooral weg uit het dorp waar ze een goede vriendin heeft maar blijft voor haar moeder. Wanneer er moorden ontdekt worden gaan de ballen aan het rollen want komen deze moorden niet bekend voor? Tuva wil door deze moorden het artikel gaan schrijven dat haar lanceert. Ze geraakt dus dieper en dieper betrokken in de zoektocht naar de moordenaar.
‘Ik ga een hoek om en zwenk langs een afgebroken berkentak. Voor me zie ik lichten, blauwe zwaailichten boven op drie auto’s en een ambulance, en ik ben blij omdat de voertuigen bescherming betekenen en me laten zien waar mijn verhaal is, ...’
Het verhaal is een klassieke thriller, misschien een beetje voorspelbaar - Zweden, bos, jacht is leven daar, moord - maar Tuva maakt veel goed. Ze heeft een heel speciaal karakter, wil heel veel, wil heel professioneel zijn maar iets lijkt haar steeds terug te trekken. Dat uit zich in tig platte batterijen, zowel voor haar telefoon, iPad,... best een dingetje als je journalist bent.
Ik had graag wat meer details gehad op bepaald momenten in het verhaal en ik had graag Tuva wat beter leren kennen alhoewel ik enorm nieuwsgierig ben nu naar hoe ze echt is. Gegarandeerd enkele spannende leesuren. Prima thrillerdebuut.

After moving to a rural Swedish town to be closer to her terminally ill mother, Tuva Moodyson finds herself working on a once in a lifetime story for the local newspaper. Tuva starts investigating the murder in connection with a series of similar cold case murders that took place in the same forest. Unfortunately for Tuva, she is forced to keep facing her fear of nature by constantly having to return to the forest during her investigation, which puts her on edge during this already dangerous story.
Tuva is such a well-written protagonist who is relatable from the very beginning. She's continuing the struggle with the death of her father, which leads her to strive to report the facts delicately so that she doesn't cause any additional suffering to the victim's families. Tuva also has a rocky relationship with her mother, which makes her feel guilty even though her feelings are justified. Plus, she's smart, strong, and driven, which makes her an extremely interesting character to follow. She's also deaf and bisexual, and neither of these characteristics are the sole reasons for her presence in the book. It's nice to see some positive representation!
In addition to Tuva, there's a cast of characters that range from fascinating to bizarre and suspicious. There's an eccentric ghost-writer, a man who is believed to have hoarding disorder, sisters who create trolls with a variety of items including some of their own hair, and a seemingly perfect couple hiding failing marriage. There's also Tuva's close friend Tammy, who is being submitted to racism at the hands of the people living in their rural town, and a cast of supportive to silently grumpy co-workers and acquaintances. Each of these characters and their circumstances are brought to life in a way that is easy to see them living their lives somewhere in reality.
The murder mystery is well planned and had me glued to the pages. I found a handful of characters highly suspicious and zeroed in on a character that was not the murderer on the loose in the forest. The way that Dean develops the murder plot is gripping and had me wanting to continue reading even when I couldn't. The case is eerie and jarring but, unfortunately, the killer's motives lack depth. The big reveal is also a bit rushed and the story has an open ending that I wish had been tied up. I think the story could benefit from an additional chapter or two to wrap things up. Regardless, I enjoyed following Tuva through the twists and turns the story takes her through and find myself looking forward to reading more from Dean.

Nothing like speed listening to a bookclub book in days before the next meeting that you almost forgot about. This is a fairly standard thriller in a lot of ways - with lots of Nordic Noir trappings that are familiar territory now. The ending was a bit unsatisfying to me but the last chase through the forest was truly gripping. I loved Tuva as a character as well so I will definitely read or listen to the follow up book - although its already incredulous to me that such a small town has such a high body count.
I had high hopes for this book as I enjoy scandi noir but it fell flat for me. The setting was good and well described but I didn’t like Tuva the main character, I found her lacking in common sense and personality. Also for an investigative journalist her attempts at investigation were very poor. Throughout the book there were interesting lines and subjects introduced that were never expanded on or explored which could have made the plot more interesting. The ending was disappointingly predictable, the identity of the murdered was obvious from the very early on.
Good read. Kept me engaged through the whole thing with interesting characters and you were never sure whodunnit till the very end.
