Good summary of history, I’d suppose, but not for me. I had to read this for school.

Do you ever read a book and go, wow, this author has never talked to a person of color in their lives? Because even ignoring some of the blatant factual fabrication in this book, the content of it is such a myopic perspective on the history of the world that I found myself predicting what the next page would say based on what I remember from my elementary school social studies class. The only mention of a non-Western civilization is when Standage is talking about the birth of civilization, which is the only thing white folk can't seem to take credit for. Shame, because I had really high hopes for this one.

Edit: Totally forgot to mention how the style of writing reminds me of a research paper from a freshman writing seminar.

Really fascinating stuff! The chronological format was quite pleasant. The coffee section got a little boring, unfortunately, but the rest was quite interesting.
Worth a read for sure.

This made me emotional about coca cola and beer at the same time which is something I’ve never experienced before and doubt I will ever again. But now I have a glass bottle coke
