It has been a long time since I've related to a character as much as I did Lady Julia Grey. She comes from a family of known eccentrics and she's been desperate for a normal life. It starts with death of her husband and the story unfolds from there. Nicholas Brisbane is a dark and sultry man with secrets that she has to pull out of him. Most of what Julia discovers is through her own naivete and ignorance. The characters evolve naturally. While it's not non-stop action, this is a page-turner that you'll want to keep coming back to.
Different reading for me but it was very good. Lady Julia Grey turned out to be a very headstrong and interesting character. The plot was decent and while I, as the reader, found it easy to deduce the mystery- it was still interesting to see how Julia herself unraveled things.
A nice introduction into an on-going mystery series. While not a page turning thriller, the story is interesting enough to keep the reader engaged. Some scenes and dialogues are unnecessarily long, but that is a trivial bugaboo.
I felt like this book started out very promising. I liked Julia's quirky family and her own quirkiness. However, I did feel like she was pretty clueless. Why would Brisbane even want her help in the first place? Why would she assume that she would be helping? Just some odds and ends that didn't line up. Entertaining, but not enough to get me invested in the whole series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. An unconventional woman, a murder investigation and an ending that keeps you guessing right to the very end. The lack of predictability in this book was refreshing, and whilst you think you have it figured out you can't help but second guess yourself. Can't wait to read the next two.
Absolutely love this book. Great beginning to one of my favorite series.

I enjoyed this much more than I was expecting. Lady Julia is a wonderfully flawed heroine (don't you hate it when the female lead is perfect?), and while I didn't always agree with what she did and said, I admired her ability to follow through on it. Brisbane was a bit more obnoxious to me, with the whole brooding hero thing he was cultivating, but I have high hopes for him in the future novels in the series! Actually, I've already requested them through my library.
