I liked the narrator, although she and everyone else seem to be horrible judges of characters as it turns out the villains did it because they were evil bundles of evilness. You'd think that would come up more in conversation. I will pick up the rest if I see them, although I'm not bothered to look too hard.
Also, I'm a bit confused by the lack of names in the climax chapter. Was I supposed to be confused about whom she was talking to?

So I guess I was expecting something spectacular from all the reviews I read. The book was entertaining, but the mystery was not all that gripping. I felt the story of a year in the lady's life was written and then a mystery was quickly woven in at the last minute. Oh, and I figured out who the murderer was about half-way through the book.
The strong character of Nicholas Brisbane is what kept the plot from completely collapsing. Raybourn has created a very, very intriguing character with him. I couldn't have cared less about the actual mystery; I just wanted to learn more about him.
I expect the next installment to be better. With a series like this, the first installment is never the best.

I read this for Vaginal Fantasy Hangout reading group/book club.
This book is not a cheesy romance but a witty, murder mystery. The characters where well developed. Julia jumped to conclusions rather quickly which Almost confused me at times. Like I missed something reading. Brisbane was hard to get a hold of which seems proper after the reader finds out about his past.
Some of his actions I think I'm still confused about.
You may guess who the murder is before the book ends but the motives did surprise me.

A light hearted Victoriana mystery. Bit slow at first but picks up the pace. Definitely structured to be the first in the series reather than a free standing novel but all good!
Positively delicious! Murder and secrets among the bon ton of London during the later years of Victoria's reign. The mystery is complex enough to be interesting (I figured the killer but not the true motive) but isn't taxing. The main character, Lady Julia Grey, is delightful, funny and lively and a great companion. Her detective accommplice is wonderfully mysterious. I devoured this in one sitting.
