The opening lines amused me, "To say that I met Micholas Brisbane over my husband's dead body is not entirely accurate. Edward, it should be noted, was still twitching on the floor." and drew me in. Lady Julia Grey loses her husband at the beginning of the book and disbelieves Nicholas Brisbane when he suggests that in fact the death wasn't natural. It isn't until a year later that she finds clues to suggest that maybe things aren't as they seem and she joins forces with Brisbane to hunt for clues.
I found it quite an interesting read, enjoyed the characters and the interaction, while there were some slightly "modern" moments it really didn't jar too much for me.
I also loved the Lady Julia Drop Caps designed by Juliana Kolesova.

This was fun, even if I knew the murderer the whole time and it showed just how far the social issues have come even in the last decade (I hate having to say that about a book published in 2007). While I will enjoy this series now, I almost wish I had discovered it in high school when I was looking for Arcane Society read-a-likes.
Liked it, didn't love it. I (like other reviewers, it seems) didn't buy the "chemistry" between the two leads.
It felt a bit odd for the time setting to have high-class people like Julia discussing venereal disease and similar things so openly, and there was a fairly modern slant to her reactions to such discussions.
Julia herself was a bit too good to be true (as was Brisbane to be honest) but I'm told Julia gets less annoying in later books? I'll try the second one, at least.
P.S. And maybe it's just me, but having two maids called Morag and Magda is not well thought out! I could not keep them straight!

This is a re-read. I love this series of historical mysteries with more than a touch of romance.
I have major mixed feelings on this one. On the one hand, I really did like the main character and the mysterious detective, Nicholas Brisbane. On the other, well, there’s a reason this was shelved in adult fiction. And some stuff I can handle and other stuff I can’t. So, approach with caution. [Jan. 2009]
I thought it was well written and interesting, I am partial to historical fiction and this book did not disappoint. I'm also pleased with myself that I guessed who the murderer was. Looking forward to reading the next book.
This is not in my normal genre, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters were well-rounded and the pace was just right. There was a hint of romance but it didn't overwhelm the story. I look forward to reading more the series.
The best thing in this book is the first page. Everything else is just a snoozefest while we wait for the heroine to figure it out. (Called it. Called the motive. Didn't call the murder weapon, but then again, poisoned condom ? That's a new level of ridiculous.)
I really like the main character, Lady Julia Grey, and many of the supporting cast. A nice, quick read, despite the length (509 pages!). It could certainly have been shortened for the better, but I look forward to reading the next books in the series.
