The experience of reading Rant is squinting at the page, thinking "I can tell you're fucking with me, but I'm not sure how". Then you think you know, but you were wrong. And then you were right. Maybe.
This book is an oral history of Rant Casey, who is could be a serial killer. And a rabies superspreader. Possibly. Just a violently weird dude. After his very publicized death, we get the collective testimony of all that knew him (or not), piecing together his improbable life. The format may be hard to get into, especially at the beginning when there's not much to anchor yourself, it feels a bit disconnected, but a few pages in you get used to it. I definitely think the middle of the book is the strongest and while I enjoyed the ending, it did fall a bit flat for me.
There are some graphic "gross-out" sequences, unexpectedly funny moments, clever satire and twisty plot... everything you expect from a Palahniuk novel.
Graphic: Pedophilia, Murder, Medical content, Adult/minor relationship, Animal death, Blood, Body horror, Car accident, Medical trauma, Vomit, Injury/Injury detail, Gore, Fire/Fire injury, Drug use, Ableism, Sexual assault, Sexual violence, Violence, Suicide, Rape, Mental illness, Incest, Misogyny, and Forced institutionalization
