'The Last Unicorn' by Peter S. Beagle was a recent pick by my book club. It has been on my TBR list for years, so it was finally time for me to read it.

A unicorn living alone in a forest fears she may be the last. She hears a rumor of the other unicorns and sets out to find them. She is joined by an inept magician named Schmendrick, a gruff woman named Molly Grue, and a lovestruck Prince Lir.

It sounds pretty straightforward, but the book winds and meanders. There were times I wanted to give up and move on to the next book. I stayed the course and found myself enchanted. It's a quieter book that rewards the patient reader. It also holds up rather well for something written half a century ago.

My version had the newer novella Two Hearts in it, and I can't recommend it enough. It was a nice afterword.

This book was hard to put down and it's easy to see why it's remained a praised classic of the fantasy genre for decades. The language has the beauty and feel of old fairytales, but the characters have the life to them that you'd find in more modern fantasy writing. It's a perfect blend of both. I'm sure younger readers would enjoy the fun and magic of the setting, but older readers, like me, can better appreciate the inner turmoil most the characters face during their quests in the novel.

I read this because the movie was one of my favourites when I was a child. and I gotta say I really love what they did with the movie compared to the book! the only bigger thing that's different is the city that doesn't exist in the film and the ending being a little different! so to speak I really enjoyed reading this and it definitely brought me back to better times.

'Whatever can die is beautiful'
'It's really not so good to have time. Rush, scramble, desperation, this missed, that left behind, those others too big to fit into such a small space - that's the way life was meant to be. You're supposed to be late for some things. Don't worry about it.'
