Started cringing so much that I turned down the volume of the audiobook so that I basically couldn’t even listen to it. Then went and asked myself why I should even continue after I kept it like that for two chapters.

It's a 2.5 really.

The positives - I found this to be a cool, intriguing concept. A world where people transform into their worst nightmares. A city full of corruption and violence. I liked the world building and the general feel of the world.

The negatives - it's not brilliantly written. The author has a tendency to repeat metaphors and descriptions - a spider crunching on bones should only be described that way once, not 25 times. Also, a spider is an arachnid not a bug. Yet the author calls it a bug 3 times on the first page. It's lazy editing. The main character Ness is incredibly dislikable and annoyingly thick. Also, without spoiling anything, hair is not really a body part. Felt like a cheap way of avoiding harm to the main character.

A lot was left unanswered and the danger constantly referred to in the book never felt real. I wasn't worried about Ness because I knew she would be fine. I didn't like her so also didn't care if she got hurt. And I felt the revelations and "plot twists" were a bit predictable.

Not great read for me.

No 🌶️ YA

This was super interesting. However I feel like the book was well rounded so let’s see if the second book was actually necessary 😇

surprisingly good!! i read it while at work so i wouldn’t say it was high concentration or super complex but the concept was so crazy unique and interesting!

it had some really funny parts and the characters were fun! the prose wasn’t always great but i still had fun and the scene at the end where everything comes together and ness realises the truth??? amazing truly!!!

the random vampire movie hate was so weird tho and cy’s dad literally paying for movies to be made to romanticise vampires was just straight up bizarre and felt out of place in an otherwise enjoyable read

This book reignited my love for both urban fantasy and YA. The male character is someone apart from an alphahole.
And credit to the author for at least trying something different.

I hope this book gets more recognition.
