Leverage in Death

Another excellent addition to the series...

As always, the action was intense, the mystery well-plotted and the dialogue and emotion between the characters was the glue that holds it all together. I can always count on these books to be a genuine pleasure.

Another really great one. But the epilogue was my favorite part. The ongoing friendship and personal lives of the characters is so special.

Disclaimer: I will follow this series to either its death or mine, because I've been reading them too long to just stop. When I read them, they all start at four stars until they do something to make me lower the rating. That said, the following review is probably a lil biased.

Maybe it's because of all the money talk, since I'm an arts major who doesn't want to think about things like economics or the stock market more than I absolutely have to, but I didn't feel this was one of the stronger entries in the series. It's still good fun (hence the four star rating), but there are definitely others I've enjoyed more.

The mains are still great, though I wish Eve and Roarke would stop having weird disagreements over comments that seem innocuous to me? I get it, they still have to have a little snap in their relationship, but...they've had variations on this disagreement 48574938472 times and they should have resolved it by now. :/ Whatever, it was only about 3 pages so easy enough to move past. Otherwise, they're still great, Peabody's still great, and it was nice to see all the characters I've come to like so much on the page again!

The mystery itself was fascinating and heartbreaking; I do wish we'd stuck to one reason or the other for things happening the way they did. Though there's usually something psychological in these books, this one was a little too on-the-nose for me. /vague

Anyway. There have been better In Death books, but there have definitely been worse, so this one still gets the standard four-star rating.

This was boring. Such a strong start but it went downhill for me really fast. The only reason this got 2 stars its because I enjoyed the personal parts of the story

Leverage in Death starts with a bang, literally and the action doesn't slow down. I enjoyed this book, and is a solid installment in the In Death series. I just didn't get into this one as much as I usually do. I also read book 47 before 46, yikes!

Leverage in Death
4 Stars

A seemingly random act of workplace violence is soon revealed to be a horrendous act of terror and torture, and homicide lieutenant Eve Dallas suspects this initial attack is only the first of many to come.

One of the more original plotlines in the series, which at book #47 and counting is no mean feat. The details of the crimes are heartbreaking, and Robb definitely knows how to evoke strong emotions for her characters whether it is sympathy and empathy for the victims or antipathy and revulsion for the villains.

The police procedural aspects of the case slow the pacing to a certain extent, but the tension and suspense ratchet up once the culprits are identified and the race is on to save the next targets.

While the focus is on the investigation, there is some good character development as the frustration of their different perspectives in life chafe at Eve and Roarke. The relationship is always more interesting when these two struggle with the realities of their conflicting outlooks.

Overall, a solid addition to the series.
