Another fantastic In Death chapter!

This is another great addition to the In Death series, my favorite of the last couple of releases. The premise is different and intriguing. The first murders have to do with the ins and outs of the stock market, buying on margin and leverage (hence the title) and that section got a bit dense for someone who is really out of their element with that topic but it doesn’t last long. The idea of someone being coerced into committing a crime by wearing a bomber vest has been used numerous times before but the intrigue here is the how and why. As usual, Robb does a great job with character development and building the story arc.

We don’t get the multiple possible guilty parties and red herrings that are often typical of this series, just a slow build to the revelation of The Who and the why.

We get a very tense scene between Eve and Roarke harkening back to their differences and the idea of trust, we of course get Eve’s background and her nightmares bringing on an interesting discussion between Eve and Roarke about if they were ever in a situation like this what they’d do.

Lightness in the story revolves around it being Oscar time and the Icove movie being nominated for several awards, including Nadine for Best Adapted Screenplay. Mavis also performs at the Oscar ceremony. Of course Eve thinks the whole thing is a pain in the butt which will just make things more annoying for her!

Great book, great storytelling, familiar characters who have become like friends. Loved how much Baxter and Trueheart we got in this book. But at the heart of it all, as always is Eve and Rourke and that is demonstrated in several ways in this book.

This one started out as one of the slowest of the Eve Dallas books. If it was anyone else I would have been tempted to put it down. That being said in the middle it sped up and ended on an amazing note.

3 1/2 stars--bumped down to three for a rocky start.

Loved the new story, it was a little more raw that some previous ones, but true to the characters. Eve still has it. I actually loved that there was some conflict between Eve and Rourke. Makes them feel much more real. Looking forward to the next book.

Too. Much. Talking. Seriously, there’s very little action in here. And while it’s true that Robb/Roberts is quite good at character-centric “talky” scenes, it just went on and on in this case. Most of the book seemed to be taken up by interviews of witnesses and suspects. The characters are quite well-drawn, but there are just too many of them. Every time a name of a witness or suspect came up again I had to stop and think for a moment to remember which person they were. It’s a shame, because when Robb does action it tends to be good. And when she does mystery it’s usually tight and taut. Unfortunately, not so much this time.

We do get to enjoy more of Eve and Roarke and their compatriots. The Academy Awards are coming up and Nadine’s book based on one of Eve’s cases, and the movie adaptation, are up for some awards. Eve is determined to give the whole mess a miss–she’s had it up to here with fancy dress–but Peabody would pretty much kill to be able to go. Also thanks to Nadine’s work Eve is becoming something of a household name, which is very much an aggravation to her. She’s such a fun curmudgeon to watch, especially when Peabody gets bubbly. (Or in one case, highly caffeinated!)

I just don’t have that much to say about this installment. It didn’t do it for me, even though I love the characters, I love dark mysteries, and I usually love Robb’s style.

Another solid entry in the series. There were moments where the twists to get characters in and out of the action had obvious solutions, but the mystery is solid.

The In Death saga continues. Threads of people and how they affect your lives. From the most mundane in someone you may pass on the street, to those you've called friend, partner, lover, for any number of years. We see some threads tied neatly in this installment. Robb is excellent at world and character building and continues to shine in that respect. Sometimes you can see who the killer is a mile away, and yet she still manages to surprise you in some way. Other times, you're left wondering who it is right up until the very end. It's been a fantastic trip to see everyone build their lives and relationships and I always look forward to the next one.

It doesn't try to do much, but what it does it does very well. The mystery was fine, but there were peeks at several of the side characters which make it a tasty read. Peabody gets to go to the Oscars with the reporter, and Mavis is singing there. Bella made Eve a picture. It's all swell.
