Honestly, when I heard this was a second chance romance about “the one who got away” I was hesitant to read this because forgiving men isn’t easy and definitely doesn’t happen often but SHANE?! Absolute kryptonite!! I adored him and Eva together and felt every single time he fought to find himself as well as have a healthy, happy, forever love.
However, this book is sold as romance but is so much MORE. It’s an insight into shared and generational trauma, and how black women take on the weight of the world in everything they do, whether it’s in motherhood, sharing art, or having to be strong through it all. 🥺
This book also pays respect to chronic invisible illness. It also provides space for being in process for finding yourself as you navigate pain and tackle the roots of trauma, but have to keep carrying on. Some say the ending felt abrupt, and I agree, but sometimes life is that way and doesn’t give you all the time in the world to solve everything.
I read this book mostly on the beach on vacation and I cackled, cried, and SWOONED extra hard in moments and didn’t care who saw me. 🏝️🤭
Forever will cherish this book because of this story and for what hope it gives me for reading romance in the future.
