-0.5 star for the constant POV switch. There were no rules- you’d blink and you’d be reading from a random character’s POV in the middle of a chapter. I don’t like when books do this, so this is my personal opinion.
-0.5 star for the epilogue which wasn’t an epilogue but just another chapter that actually wrapped up the story. The story should be able to stand on its own without an epilogue, however the epilogue changed the whole story.
-0.5 star for the multiple Harry Potter references which did not need to appear and served nothing. This was written in 2019 when JKR was still a transphobe. Wholly unnecessary in a romance book.

I enjoyed this book but I found I started to get a little bit bored by the end. I’m not sure if this is because I listened to the audiobook, which is a format I’m still getting used to, or if the book was just a bit too long for the story. I thought the narrator, Mela Lee, did a great job of portraying the characters though, and I did feel engaged and invested in them earlier in the story, but I just felt it started to meander a little in the end.
The characters were really interesting and I loved the personality and dynamic contrasts between Eva, Audrey and Lisette - especially Audrey who added a fun, sarcastic edge to the story. I also thought the flashbacks and back stories of Eva and Shane were intriguing, despite very sad, and I enjoyed learning about their early relationship. Lisette was an infuriating character, and I felt a lot of empathy for Eva throughout.
Overall, an enjoyable read with engaging characters, but not one I’d rush to re-read.

The author managed to create relatable, realistic, flawed and gripping characters. They were raw, honest, vulnerable and resilient. I loved both Eva and Shane and how they overcame their horrific pasts. I especially loved that they made better choices for themselves and grew as individuals before rekindling their romance.
The author handled sensitive topics delicately and with empathy for the characters. I felt like I knew the characters and they could exist in my world.
Every decision in this book seemed intentional, there was no unnecessary drama nor any shock value scenes. Every word and scene was intentional. I recommend everyone read this beautiful, mature and wholesome black romance.
