“And I asked myself about the present: how wide it was, how deep it was, how much was mine to keep” (p. 18).
“The champagne was dead. So it goes” (p. 73).
“…What we love in our books are the depths of many marvelous moments seen all at one time” (p. 88).

This book confounded and engaged me. The writing style is plain, which horrifically and beautifully contrasts the many gruesome and dark events. Billy Pilgrim's fluidity in time raises questions about the nature of free will and the inevitability of war, questions I don't feel like Vonnegut ever answered. But the lack of answer only adds to the enjoyment of the book, it's a pondering on human nature, war, and time from an author who was really there in Dresden during the bombing and has seen with his own eyes some of the most horrible things one can imagine. Does he really believe these types of horrors are inevitable? Is the idea that we have no free will, time moves in every direction, a way to cope with one's own bad luck, guilt, or even complicity?
What the heck have I read?
This is one of a kind book. It is hard to define and it needs you, as a reader, to leave any idea that you have about how storytelling should be, outside the reading room. It goes all over places and yet makes perfect sense. I don't know how or why. What a journey!

Going into this book knowing nothing but that it deals with the firebombing of Dresden in some way wasn’t a good idea. The time-travel caught me completely off guard and I was honestly too confused by what was going on for too long to really enjoy the book (probably because it’s barely over 200 pages long). Also, I’d say take a shot for every "So it goes." or "and so on" but frankly, that would put anyone into a hospital within the first 30 pages. I’d say drink a sip of water every time instead but I’d still be too concerned about the risk of water poisoning.
