Man I loved this ending and the beginning of this manga. That being said it overstayed its welcome and kept repeating the same plot lines again and again. The message of the ending and the larger philosophical points the series makes are severely undercut by 5-6 volumes of unneeded filler. Changing advisories for Kira halfway through made no sense and just prolonged the series.

Still one of the best โ€œbattle of witsโ€ stories that exists. Although this author does a pretty terrible job of writing women. I wish the women were more than just tools for the main characters.

What an ending! I remember my first time witnessing all the twists and turns of the final chapter, I was so emotional, and very satisfied. I also love that no matter who's side you're on, it's up in the air who's going to win, and it would be quite difficult to predict the outcome.
Spoiler I'm still sad that L wasn't able to Light finally get his comeuppance, but alas, we can't have it all.
Overall really great, one of my all-time favorite series.

So, after 12 volumes this was the final one, the end of the series.
The confrontation between L and K that started at the very first chapters ended here in a totally different kind of confrontation...

SPOILER ALERT\\\

The ending was such a...... "pain" maybe !! I don't know exactly how to describe it!
Kira got killed by the shinigami Ryuk, and he is the one who started the whole thing in the series, To begin with, it was all because of the boredom of one shinigami that he has nothing interesting to do in his realm, so he went to get some from the human world, he dropped his notebook, and then Yagami Light( the center character of the novel) it was only a mere coincidence that he happened to pick that notebook, but with that he changed the whole world...
Light a serious person with a strong sense of justice, with a high level of thinking, at the beginning, one can't help but think how cool and awesome he is, but that all change, with time, when he got sunk into the temptation of power that the notebook has, Light sense for justice that he wants the "rotten" world to become a better world is not wrong but the method that he used to that\ the path that he chooses to take was undoubtedly wrong, at the beginning he only killed criminals but with time he started killing innocent people and then he said that it was "inevitable" even his dad death described it like that, that only tells us about what the notebook has done to him, he was clearly innocent pure teenager with a dream to build a better world, before he died everyone admitted that he really did achieve a lot of good things like reducing the worlds crime rate by 70 percent and there are no more wars, but that was a dictatorial reign the way he did it he managed to do it by force and the fear , but the price he becomes the devil himself...
Light got cornered at the end by the only people who left to defy his evilness, and then the whole scene there, honestly it was hard to read because he was really pathetic a fool a psychopath who believed himself to be a god when he is only a mere human who happened to pick up the notebook, the way he acted the confession the whole scene only tell us about the person that he had become a mass murderer...
I would have considered another ending if he had not gotten farther from ideologies that he had at the beginning, but the person that he was at the end can only give us that kind of a sad ending, both sides are damaged, they got through a lot and won over the power of Kira, but they definitely everyone there lost a lot of people in the process..
To conclude it, there is still a lot of mixed feelings !!!

and never I have forgotten one of the very first things that Ryuk said:"I don't care if it is fortunate or unfortunate that Light picked up the Death Note. However... It is generally bad luck for a person to be followed by a God of Death." it is a quote that has a lot of meaning through the whole scenes that were in the series...
In other words to give the death penalty to another is not the job of a human, I can understand the hopes and the desire to make a better world, but to kill for that is definitely not right...
