“Was there enough disinfectant in the world to cleanse the house of Usher?”

Maybe this wasn’t the best book to read while dealing with a stomach bug, or maybe that just made it even better and much more visceral.

I’ll admit, I tend to stay clear of fungus related horror, it truly freaks me out, but after hearing about this book, a kind of re-telling of one of Poe’s classics, I put my fears aside…and my god were they just reinforced.

I think I might lay off mushrooms for a little while, but I’m already very excited to get into the sequel, What Feasts At Night, and to get to spend more time with the stupendous Alex Easton.

T. Kingfisher’s writing was gorgeous, and the research that went into the book is so noticeable, it really helps set the scene and lock you into this vibrantly dreadful world.

This was really fun! Spooky, creepy, fungal. Kinda gross. I loved the pronoun and gender system. T. Kingfisher is a gem.

Okay maybe in hindsight i wouldn't give this a 5 star, I'll see how it settles. But in the meantime, I LOVED THIS!! This was my first real horror read and the fact that it was gay, atmospheric, funny, and about mushrooms just hit all the right notes for me. I listened to erie spooky instrumentals while reading and it just made it such a peak experience. Thank you T. Kingfisher, and thank you @caricanread for reccomending them.

Love a new take on the fall of the house of Usher. I really liked the narrator. The most disturbing parts are painted in such a clear way that you’ll create a full picture that will stick with you for a while.

I thought it was pretty good and I really enjoyed listening to the audiobook! I got the second one bc I liked the main character very much, although I feel like the whole book has kind of a low-key vibe. The mystery feels more like there's secrets behind sheer curtains, rather than locked doors, if that makes sense. Even the urgent parts didn't feel wildly urgent, although kingfisher has an absolutely excellent way of describing things that gave me the heebie-jeebies a few times. Even if it didn't get my heart pounding, I still got the "eugh that's so gross I love it" and that for me was one of the best parts. It's very visceral and I think that makes up for the pacing. A good book if you like something slow and spooky that creeps up on you as you read, instead of jump scaring you.
