I didn't know that this was a fantasy book. I thought the doors were metaphorical :D they weren't. The doors are real. Gateways to other worlds all around our world. The worlds description are my favorite part. The author is imaginative, witty and romantic.
The MC is a teenage girl who finds a door when she was a child. Her mother is gone and her father works for a wealthy man obsessed with collecting artifacts from all around. He finds them for him. The n she finds a book written by her father telling their true story.
A boy and a girl from different worlds meet once and then the door is destroyed. So she spends her life searching for him, following odd stories because they often lead to a door, visiting many worlds till she finally finds his world, The Written. A world where words have actual real powers. Where word workers change reality with just their pen or any other means of writing. My favorite world in any story I ever read <3
The girl (Ad) and and the boy (Julian) meet again, get married and live happily. Then the adventurous spirit in the girl stirs wanting to travel again, the boy agrees to go with her and their baby girl but they get separated. Julian and the baby find their way to our world and thought his wife to be lost in the void between worlds. He meets Mr. Locke the wealthy man who promises him too help him find his wife, while he travels worlds and collects artifacts for him.
The he finds out about the society, men trying to destroy every door in the world separating this world from all other They followed him as he found the doors, waited for him to leave then destroyed the door.
The MC reading the book and knowing the truth is sent to a mental hospital then she escapes after discovering her power to open doors. then she starts her own journey with the help of the carer her father sent, her friend Sam and bad her dog. Running from the society, trying to find the safe haven her father wrote about, then trying to find her parents. During the journey, she finds Arcadia a world for runaways from different worlds. The society follows her and destroy the door trapping everyone inside without a way to get food or anything from outside. In Arcadia there are feather that makes its holder invisible.
She using her power openes the door again and decides to leave alone looking for her parents. She finally goes to the location of the 1st door her mom found. And meets her family. But then Mr. Locke finds her. He tells her that he is the founder of the society and he is from a different world. A cruel bad world, where they had the power to influence others thoughts and actions. He ran away and found a door here. An easy comfortable world where no one can defy him. Then he destroyed the door and gathered others to work with him. Finding and destroying doors. Keeping this world only under his control.
She defeates him and opens a door back to her birthplace where she meets her who spent her life looking for them too. Later her dad finds them and they're together again. Then her inherited adventurous spirit stirs and she leaves to make her own story.
So it is love and fear that motivated all charcters in this story. Love made a family look for eachother over and over without giving up. Fear for his daughter that made him leave her and hide the truth. Locke's fear of losing control that made him destroy all doors.
A good read for the beginnig of the year.
Never a dull moment.

Excellent writing. Almost poetic at times.

This may have to be a reread as I didn’t find it as FANTASTIC as those I follow.

Soooo very long and at times, difficult to follow. And I didn’t feel a connection with the characters.

Somewhat reminded me of “The never ending story”.

An excellent story if a little bit predictable. It pulls you in and really makes you want to read the second half in one sitting and it's not hard to do. It's exciting and has very good descriptions and portrayal of emotions. It was also refreshing for someone to mention the difference of a POC with money and how society treats/treated them vs a POC that is poor and their treatment. I hadnt seen that elsewhere.
