I absolutely adore this book! It was such a pleasure to read, with wonderfully luscious prose and well written characters including the very relatable female protagonist. The book itself reads like a love letter to stories and the imagination, and contains the odd discrete nod to a work of fiction or two. It uses a couple of popular literary fiction devices very well - the idea of a book within a book and footnotes. While it covers some serious topics, they are handled with a perfect balance of pathos to humor. I now have to immediately buy everything else she’s written

Yes, I nearly cried by the end; yes, this book was beautiful; yes, the protagonist was the star of this. And of course I loved this!

Alix took a portal fantasy and did a beautifully nuanced and fresh take upon it. This reads very much in the vein of Seanan McGuire's wayward children books. Perhaps a bit less fairy tale? But with the same teeth, a very similar message and similar themes. I highly highly recommend this. I also recommend you go pick up Seanan Mcguire's wayward children books while you're at it. I would really really love to see more in this universe, but the book ends with a very lovely little capstone that I don't think asks for more.

January is a lovely heroine And I really loved seeing her find her words and step into her own journey. I would love to see more of her, and I would absolutely kill to see a side story featuring Jane and her world. When you get to her you'll know why.
