This book loses .25 stars for slightly suffering from second book syndrome. By that I mean that even though there was a fair bit of character and plot development, this very much felt like a means to an end. That being said, I did love the crew in this book: Bo, Nitta and Merrin are great characters along with the others. This book did also feel like one bad thing after another after another, these guys truly couldn't catch a break. Lova was also such a firecracker of a character to be introduced to and I cannot wait to know more about her and her ties to Wren. Learning more about the rules of magic and the Sickness in this book was also very fun.
Now. I am a sucker for a witty character. So how dare you then go and kill him! Bo deserved better, poor Merrin and Nitta deserved better I just couldn't believe he was killed off what felt like so quickly. Also the betrayal arc where Lei finds out that Wren killed the daughter from the White Wing clan and Wren's father has been organising some of the attacks? An awful, heart-breaking plot and yet the argument they had felt like it needed to happen.
The seeds of doubt have been planted and I'm terrified of what's to come in the final book.

Things I liked about this:
The handling of PTSD

Things I didn't like about this:
Bury your gays trope for 2 characters

Cheater bisexual trope

The underdeveloped romances of the main couple and the subplot couple.

I totally did not expect to like this sequel, but damn I did! I really need book 3.
My heart is not okay after all of this.

This book really suffered from middle book syndrome. I'm not sure I care enough to want to read the last book in this series; characters seem to have regressed in their development, and nothing of significance happened during the plot. In fact, I'm certain that if you read the first book, skipped this one and went straight to the third, you wouldn't be missing anything.

Review

Usually second books in series aren't as good as the first--Girls of Storm and Shadow is rare that I found it more enjoyable than the first! I connected with the characters more and enjoyed the plot.
