Yeonmi Park’s In Order to Live is a gripping, emotionally powerful memoir that hooked me from the very first page with its vivid imagery and raw, honest storytelling. Park’s ability to weave her traumatic journey—from life in North Korea to her harrowing escape—is both heart-wrenching and inspiring, pulling at the heartstrings in all the right places. However, after finishing the book, I came across several reports highlighting inconsistencies in her story. While it’s unclear whether these stem from trauma and CPTSD or possible sensationalism, they do cast some doubt. For that reason, I’m giving it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
