Towards the back of the memoir, Yeonmi said that people view North Korea as the place with nuclear weapons and leaders with bad haircuts but don't know (maybe can't know?) what it's like to live and survive as a North Korean. That really struck me. I learned SOOO much - her story is absolutely mind-blowing, terrifying, heartbreaking, inspiring. Just wow.

honestly, i wasn't too sure if i wanted to give this book 4 stars or nothing at all? i've been skimming on the internet about yeonmi park whilst reading her book and there were a lot of questionable things about her. however, i've been always fascinated by how isolated north korea is and how the regime is trying to keep it isolated from the outside world much as possible.

even though i feel questionable about the author, was it really well written and did she and her mom had to go through horrible things. its so sad to think about that there are millions of people out there suffering in that country. even though maybe not everything is 100% true, she shined a light on the story of other north koreans who are trapped in their country. 4 stars because of that and her courage.

The harrowing and sad tale of the author's life and escape from North Korea.

What can I possibly say after reading this? Such a heartbreaking but important memoir. I cannot even begin to fathom how much courage and strength it takes to do what Yeonmi and so many other North Korean defectors have done to be free. Everyone needs to read this.

In Order To Live is the true story of Yeonmi Park who escaped from North Korea with her mother.

This book is really emotional and I cried when she was talking about all her emotions about her speech for One Young World Summit having just watched that and seen how emotional and passionate she was.

Yeonmi's story is truly inspiring and she continues to inspire and work for North Korean rights. I highly recommend reading this young girls truly incredible story and putting your life into perspective. I am so privileged to happen to be born in Australia and so inspired that Yeonmi has been through so much and prevailed not only to find happiness in her own life but to help others who are struggling.

If you don't normally read non fictions and don't think you'd pick this up I urge you to youtube Yeonmi's One Young Nation speech, listen and educate yourself on what is happening right now. This story isn't 100 years ago Yeonmi is only a year older then I am being born in 1993 and I am truly inspired by her hard work.

I've stopped reading non fiction in the last few years and I don't know why these stories are always so important and emotional. I can't wait to read some more non fics asap.

At 13, Yeonmi Park was starving in North Korea, and her family’s situation was hopeless. Living near the border of China, Park wondered if she could continue living if she escaped to China. But, without any accurate news or knowledge about moving across the border, little social awareness and survival skills, and no resources, Park’s sister escaped, followed by Park.

What follows next is Park’s discovery that life in China is dangerous, evil is out to prey on her, and the Chinese government is out to send her back. The story is indescribable and frightening. But Park’s bravery to tell her story at a detailed level she had never shared before, and few have, shines above all.

This is a very important book for everyone to read. This is an exceptional educational piece to learn the struggles Kim Jong-il’s rule imposed on the North Korean citizens, especially those not in a higher class as deemed by the government officials.

Park was 21 when she wrote this book, and with youth on her side, she captures her story with a rare honesty that comes with fresh wounds. The events are so unthinkable they will keep you reading to see how her circumstances will unfold.
