Always hard to give a star rating to someone’s life story. The tale here is harrowing, shedding a lot of light on what I felt like I knew (or didn’t know) about North Korea and paths to escape for defectors. The writing is a little simplistic (could be the translation) but that’s not really the point here anyways. Basically every trigger warning on this one, so read with caution.

What a fascinating and haunting story. I immigrated here from South Korea as a baby, so this story was haunting to me. I admire her and her family.

Park's experience sheds light on the atrocities in North Korea, but more so shows the mental and emotional journey that refugees around the world face as they leave everything they have known to create a "new normal." Her speeches have shown us facts and emotions, but this book shows us how she processes her thoughts and plans her actions. The past has not left her; it now fuels her.
