Wow what a journey. Horrifying and powerful.
I loved this part in particular when Yeonmi is describing her experience of learning to read: “I was starting to realize that you can't really grow and learn unless you have a language to grow within. I could literally feel my brain coming to life, as if new pathways were firing up in places that had been dark and barren. Reading was teaching me what it meant to be alive, to be human.”

A must-read for everyone. Yeonmi’s life story of her experience in North Korea has completely changed my world view. I am not complaining about the petty and ‘unfair’ things in my life anymore.
This book takes us through Yeonmi’s remarkable journey of her escape from North Korea, but also her survival in North Korea, China & South Korea. Yeonmi has a bravery & determination to live that I’m not sure I would have had if I was in her shoes.
The stark contrast of reading a chapter then returning to normal life made me realise the day-to-day necessities that are actually luxuries for so many. These are things I have always taken for granted - security in my home or knowing when my next meal will come, to name but a few.
I would recommend this to everyone to pick up at one point in their lives.

An honest and surprisingly easy to read tale of a North Korean girls life (so far)

This book brought me to tears more than once. It is hard to grasp that Yeonmi is not that much older than me and to imagine what she had to endure already as a child is heartbreaking. Also, that there are so many others like her with the same experience. I really rreally recommend this book to everyone.

I am really interested in stories like that but I can say this is one of the most interesting books on North Korea I've ever read. Really inspirational. After all, if she could achieve all that, what is stopping us??? Lack of time or opportunities? How much worse can you get, compared to what she has been through? Definitely recommend (it's a page-turner from sentence 1) to anyone who would like to know what's like to live in this 'country'.
