This was a helpful book assigned as required reading in high school. However, the author is a Zionist - he was already attempting colonization in 1946 and the genocide (Nakba) occured in 1948. There are other survivors like those in Jewish Voice for Peace who have not become the oppressor in their freedom. It's really sickening how awful this man is and has tainted the book too much for me to ever recommend it.

I am so drained after reading this. Such an important book but so incredibly difficult.

Clearly a very personal and haunting story. I had known of this book for a while and I'm glad to have finally read it. For a firsthand account of the horrors of the holocaust, I'd recommend this book but really review the content warnings first. Seeing his attitudes towards Palestine in the epilogue is more haunting.

I think everyone should read this book. I know about the Holocaust, but I don’t think I’ve ever pictured it as clearly as here. Wiesel’s testimony is truly moving. I think everyone should read this book to face the hard truths of what happened to the people in the concentration camps and of how cold humans can be. Hopefully, we can all become more loving and compassionate as a result.
