This comic runs with the age old question of "what would happen if all men were suddenly gone and only women remained on the earth?" The answer, though very America-centric since this is an American comic, is pure chaos, post-apocalyptic conditions, and the rising threats of extremist cults and republicans. I genuinely did like the setup and details of the men disappearing; from every man dying in a sudden bloodbath in a single second to every male animal being included in the reckoning. It added a lot of world-building because it posed new issues like the piles of dead male corpses in cars on the freeway clogging the roads and making them untraversable, the majority of airplane pilots being men and air travel not being feasible for non-military personnel, and eventually running out of animals for meat because they can no longer reproduce either. The story has many ongoing plotlines at once that I assume are going to converge once the plot gets deeper, and the ending of the collection of issues 6-10 called "Cycles" sets up a good cliffhanger reveal that will change the way characters are going to operate going forward. As for the things that stopped this from being a 5 star for me, a lot of it had to do with the offensive language used, Yorick's unlikability, and two specific women falling for him after only knowing him for very short amounts of time. The language isn't a dealbreaker for me because I know the context of this being created in 2002 when society was much different and common language in media and general life was a lot less sensitive, but beware of racial slurs, the r slur, and unnecessary references to sexual assault. Although unlikable characters also aren't a dealbreaker for me, I think Yorick still acts too brashly and impulsively given the situation, and I think that him being annoying is the trait that makes him the most recognizable as a man lmao (more than him literally having a dick and that fact being brought up and proven several times). Overall this comic was super interesting, had great art and two solid main characters that I want to stick around for, and I'm definitely going to continue the series.
