Kind of an in-between feeling to this book, a lead-up to the finale rather than a story in its own right. Still good development though, but I wish there was more time for the relationships between the gang to develop more.
What an awesome read! I could not put this one down, just HAD to know what was going to happen next.
Loved the way the story was related in baches, from a different vantage point of each of the characters. Even better, this was NOT the last book in this series!!!! I was totally surprised to actually reach the end of this story only to find...WAIT, THER'S MORE

This book STRESSED ME OUT. In a way this series reminds me of Harry Potter, it starts out with these young adults trying to succeed at challenges and just make it in the world and some dark stuff seems to be happening around the edges. And then somehow it turns into full on conflict and war. Book three was a tough read for me so I was worried book 4 would also prove to be a bit of slog sometimes but I was wrong. I couldn't put the book down. I needed to know what would happen next. I have really come to love a bunch of these characters, especially Wolfe and Santi and Glain. Maybe that's another way this feels like Harry Potter - you feel like you know these people and it doesn't feel like fiction. I know a miniseries could never do it justice, but oh I would watch the hell out of it.

Another great entry in the series
Nice pace with lots of adventure and intrigue, finally starting to round out the stories of so many good characters and even introduce a few new ones.

This is a series that has consistently blown me away and Smoke and Iron is no different. Caine takes a different approach here and has split the book into different perspectives. I was nervous when I realised this as it is a tactic that can easily get messy, but it is executed brilliantly. Each of the characters is different and Caine jumps into their heads and their lives perfectly; it doesn't jar at all, seeming fluid and consistently moving.
That said, I suspect loving the characters helps. They are all so fleshed out and real that you feel as though you are right beside them. All are flawed and broken or breaking in some ways and the way those cracks and lines are used is exemplary throughout. Morgan is undeniably the weakest character whilst Wolfe one of the strongest, and the portrayal of strength in brokenness is powerful as hell. Because the characters spend so long split up, the moving perspectives really works, constantly keeping you engaged in the events spread out across long distances.
The scene is getting ever darker and events beginning to spiral out of control, politics and ethics clashing and warring. I can't deny I love this series and am glad the next one is due out so soon.

I can't even describe how much I love this series. I want to enjoy it, take my time, hold these books close, and hope they never end but at the same time I want to binge read and consume the story without hesitation.
I'm kicking myself for taking a break between book 3 and book 4. Precious months lost without knowing this amazingly satisfying book. I want to pickup book 5 immediately and yet hold back to savor (as mentioned before).
I love how this book volleys between viewpoints and its done so seamlessly. Seriously, pick up this series and read it. You won't regret it.

This took me forever to finish! The last 100 pages were great, but I finally reached the classic "middle book" in the series that spends more time setting up the conclusion than anything else. Lots of talking and deciding and waiting.......
