This was probably a 2 to 2.5 for the story and characters for me, but bumped up for a three cause the vibes were immaculate. I was intrigued through the front half to keep reading but I felt the ending dragged as I predicted where the book was going to go and what the storyline was going to be early on. I felt like things were a little convenient and that there weren't enough hurdles for the characters to get where they needed to go in the storyline, such that I felt that this story could have been split over two books in a duology to allow for more conflict and better development of the characters. I wasn't invested in the romantic storyline, and didn't like that Effy never truly reflected on her attitude towards Preston as someone from a different country except for one line in the story. The basis of this story truly intrigued me, but I felt like the fact it was only one book stood in the way of its potential for me. I would be interested in reading more from Ava Reid in the future, though.

I really like this book, a 4.5 stars read for me.
It's a dark gothic read with a dash of romance and mystery, it's also exploring themes of sexism, power, and control, kinda feminist story. When I say dark it's really dark with trigger warning, some parts really hard for me to read. I really love the setting, so atmospheric, so real, I feel the creepiness and the cold and I'm not a big fan of water, so the storm, the sea, that drowning and flooding, got me that wet suffocating feeling that got my heart racing. This book also makes me feel so much from the get go, the anger, the fear, the frustration, the doubts, the depression, what Effy's been through is really rough. The romance is pretty sweet, I like the banter even though I wished there's more spark. Not a big fan of the revealing about the mystery of Angharad, felt kinda rushed? kinda wrapped up too nicely and conveniently. Overall, this book has flaws, not perfect, but it makes me feel so much and I loveee all the vibes it brings, so yeah I really really like it.

Me encantó este libro aunque al inicio es algo lento.
When I was reading it, I didn't know if I liked it or not. When I finished it, I was even less sure. There are a couple cute moments, but the scenes dragged on so much that it no longer felt romantic to me. The plots all climax and resolve in almost the same moment. As soon as the big problem appeared, it was also vanquished. The victim also is a bystander to the big problem, so that feels weird, too.
It was a miss for me. I dont think I'll read the sequel.

Dark academia meets gothic folklore in the best way
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ 4.5 Stars
Loved this book! I read it in just two sittings—it pulled me in from the very start. The middle dragged a little, which is why it’s not a full 5 stars, but everything else worked so well for me.
The dark academia, gothic vibes were everything. Effy was such a compelling protagonist; I felt so much compassion for her struggles and how the patriarchy stood in her way—especially in the university setting. Preston was such a breath of fresh air compared to the other men in Effy’s life, and I loved watching their relationship slowly grow.
The Welsh-inspired folklore was incredible, and the way the myths Effy believed in turned out to be true was deeply satisfying. I can’t wait to see more of Effy and Preston in the second book, and I’ll definitely be picking up more from Ava Reid in the future!
