The first half of this book was dull but not dull enough to not complete and I’m glad I did! The last third and climax of the story was so well done. Was it worth the slog of the first half of the story? I’m not sure.
Things I think the author did well:
The theme of women reclaiming their stories and finding their voices really resonated with me.
Things that were undercooked : the racism/prejudice subplot and classism subplot (Northerns vs southern aka rich vs poor )
There was a subplot regarding how Effy and a lot people in their country had deep seated prejudice against another country. Preston was from that country and initially she was hateful towards him but because she fell in love I guess she was no longer racist ? It’s giving “my girlfriend is black so I’m no longer racist -_-“. Wish Effy did more work on confronting her prejudice against the folks from a different country because it seemed like Preston and the rest of his people really didn’t do anything bad however there wasn’t much context and development as to WHY the two countries were still at war.
Felt there was not enough done in those two subplots and if they were developed and had a well done conclusion as the woman empowerment plot line I would rate this higher.

Beautiful, painful, compelling, captivating, enthralling - and I couldn't love Effy and Preston more!

Great ambiance, this books gets you so immersed in it that you feel a part of the story.
The romance is also very good because it feels so natural, the characters have great chemistry, it's all very cute.

Now for the not so good part: they took waaay too long to figure everything out when it as already kind obvious by the middle of the book. And also, they carelessly leaving fundamental evidence out in the study where Ianto could find was simply dumb.
I wish we could've seen more of Effy's interests or skills in architecture or in writing, or more of Effy in general because there's no way she spent all of her time just reading the same book and going to classes over and over.

Besides these details, I had a great experience reading this book. For fantasy readers who like some mistery, this is a great pick!
