The incongruity of the mundanity of tone and the extraordinary event made this such an intriguing read. Being more concerned about not getting to work rather than the fact that you're a giant bug has an absurdity to it... And it shifts to so sad as his devotion to his neglectful family continues, even after he is all but forgotten. I am glad I finally got around to reading this classic.

Giving it a 5 because the writing didn't blow me away but the impact this book had in the end really did and will stay with me for a while. The first time I heard of this book was in AP Lit where we read the first few pages and Tyler and I were crying laughing because the out of context self-disgust was too real, little did I know how sad this book would be.
It's a short novel and was easy and refreshing to read, but it was a hard read because I so badly want better for Gregor when we can see the abuse he is enduring but he is so filled with love for his family it blinds him to it. I love how this novel explores many difficult themes and makes you reflect on a lot of issues prevalent in todays capitalistic society. A depressing novel in an enjoyable way. Loved the weirdness of it and magical realism elements.
The only thing is translations are my roman empire for the way I was always wondering what was changed from word choice to tone/mood and intention from Kafka's original, especially because all the versions are so different. I read the 77pg translation by Ian Johnston.
