This is one of the first works I have ever read by Kafka and honestly I was shocked by how peak this was. It made me think a lot about how we regard people by how useful they are to us or to the community when we should all be simply living.

I don’t think this story is nearly as funny or deep as Kafka meant it to be. In fact, the idiocy of the majority of the characters is just frustrating and make this a difficult read. Paradoxically, The Metamorphosis is both too drawn out and too simplistic. While I can appreciate Kafka’s message about human nature, he could have conveyed it in a story that was better executed and less infuriating.

this book is so whack. genuinely my most academic thought about this is: WTF??? I hope I never again have to read a book where the main character is a giant bug whose family eventually resents him for being a giant bug and driving away business, but I think it’s safe to say that any manuscripts proposing the same plot should stay unpublished. I thought books were supposed to make you think??? this one just answers the question, “if I were a worm, would you still love me?” with an EMPHATIC “NO!”
