Inexplicably, however, Gregor is turned into an insect and is forced to make do with his new body. Being forced to quit his job due to an unexplained absence and having his parents begrudgingly discover his new state to their utter dismay and horror, Gregor is forced to self-isolate in his room so that his family will worry less about him. The Metamorphosis is a true tragedy in that Gregor is slowly losing everything and everyone that he had in his old life, and is forced to have everything around him change for the worst.

God if I could give this a zero I would. We had to read it in my Ap english class my senior year and my entire class was ready to commit mass suicide. Even my teacher didn't like it. I don't remember why she said she taught it anyway, I think she was forced to. Its the dumbest thing I have ever read, I don't care what it was supposed to be a metaphor for or why it was considered to be good at its time, its crap, pure crap.

I loved this so much. It was somehow both devastating and silly at the same time. Right off the bat, the first thing Gregor Samsa worries about when he wakes up as a giant bug is the train he has to take to work. It's funny because he should be worrying about his body being transformed overnight, but upsetting that he's so jaded from providing for his family that he can't even let himself despair about it. The way it's written is so interesting to me. I kept switching between being amused and then immediately upset and pained at his situation. I'm so glad I finally read this, even though I'm now quite upset about it.
