This is a book that needs to be studied rather than read. This translation provides an easy to understand insight into the sutras. I am new to yoga and the philosophy is clearly a cousin of Buddhism. It is fascinating to read how the spiritual content is the primary motivation behind the asanas that is so typically associated with yoga.

Honestly, it was over my head. I'm not training to be an instructor though, so perhaps that is to be expected. I read another book recently and it referred to this one several times. I was curious. I wonder... would audio have been a better format for me? I guess we'll never know. The quote I liked the most was in the preface:

"Just be good and do good."

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is one of the most important primary source Yoga texts. If you are serious about learning about yoga, it is imperative that you read this book. After reading this book you will have a much better understanding about Yoga than the average practitioner in the west. Do yourself a favor and read this book. Then reread it a few times.

Appreciated this translation and interpretation of the Yoga Sutras.

I was engaged with the translation of the original text, but it was muddied by the continuous exposition. Such commentary diminishes and dilutes rather than expands and enhances.

Alan Watts, Ram Dass, Vivekananda, Tolle, and just about anyone else I've ever read or listened to that touches Spirituality or religion outside of the Abrahamic tradition eventually gets around to Patanjali and his Yoga Sutras.

And there's clearly a reason. I enjoyed Satchidananda's translation and commentary, as he wrote in a very practical and pragmatic way (Indian pragmatism is a virtuous stereotype) that I found accessible. His choice to restrain his commentary on the last two books was wise.

I found that I know more Sanskrit than I thought.

Yoga is work. Inner work. Accepting the work of the mind and self really connects with me.

I want to read another commentary on Patanjali's sutras in the near future.
