I really wanted to like this book a lot more than I did. I really wish that my low rating doesn't keep anyone from reading it because it's a beautiful story told from a perspective that one doesn't often experience. A perspective that's important and should get more opportunities to be expressed.
Hobson's story is a look at all the different ways that loss and injustice can break a person. Add in the tragic element of the Trail of Tears and how viscerally it paints the horrors for the reader, and it's a direct hit to the solar plexus. It's human and heartbreaking, and I'm sad to say that that's partly why I didn't enjoy it as much. I don't know if it's the season, the mindset, or just one sad thing too many, but, even though I connected to the characters, I kept finding reasons to walk away and breathe.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Ecco for the read.

This was a really good find on the MCL Indigenous stories Libby list this month, dealing with grief of loss and addiction in a beautiful way.
Not sure how to rate this, so I'm erring in the book's favor. I felt distracted as I read so surely missed some of the nuance and much of the symbolism in the text, none of which is the books fault.
The Removed by Brandon Hobson was a step away from my typical genre of thrillers and mysteries but it definitely was entertaining enough to read within hours. The novel unfolds with a multi viewpoint story of a family over the course of a few days leading up to a bonfire of remembrance for one of the family members that was killed by a cop 15 years previous. The story lets you get to know the members of the family, and it has such rich descriptions and pulls from Cherokee folklore to approach topics of trauma, grief and family.
The ending leaves you thinking and wanting more, but maybe that’s me because of my own grief of losing a family member in a different but still traumatic way. I definitely appreciated this novel, I’d recommend it for sure.
