I just couldn't get into this book. I was bored and some things weren't making sense or I was just lost. I went looking at other reviews to try and understand but just like me, others were confused. Someone even said some things don't get explained at all and I'm definitely not a fan of that, so I'm just out.

DNF 100 pages in.

The Removed is both an eerie and spiritually comforting meditation on grief, whether that's the kind of immediate grief of a child who is shot and killed by police or the massive, almost incomprehensible grief of the Trail of Tears. What I really like about Hobson's stories is his willingness to take chances with his audience:
yes, this foster child may really be channelling Ray-Ray's spirit; yes, there's a guy named Jackson Andrews who's programming a game asking players to commit violence against Native holograms in the Darkening Land.
In both The Removed and Where the Dead Sit Talking, Hobson is wonderfully skilled at capturing atmosphere and really sinking the reader into the scene with his characters.

I loved this book. The characters were so well developed and the way Cherokee mythology and culture was woven into the story really enhanced the story telling.

Beautiful writing. Heart wrenching as the family deals with both personal and systemic trauma, on top of historical trauma. Appropriate for older teens and adults. Highly recommend.

The beautiful masterpiece of storytelling, awakening inner, deeper thoughts and memories. Brandon Hobson managed to tell the tragic story of loss and recovery, the story of being able to let it go, through prism of Cherokee legends and believings. Though it's close to magical realism, the mythic part feels very organic. I had the only concern about the ending, it seemed a little bit rushed and unfinished, still after some days I felt the author left all the other questions for reader to answer. As the spirits will dictate.

This book was out of my comfort zone, but I’m glad that I read it. Not a feel good book by any means, but it tackles much needed topics such as the Trail of Tears, family ties, and ancestral influences. Overall a great read.
